Why This Plant Extract Was So Valuable In The Ancient World, and How It Can Help You Today

Most likely you have heard the Biblical story of the three wise men in ancient times. They undertook a long journey to bring gifts to someone who, it was foretold, would be king. The gifts that they brought included gold, which most people will find easy to understand, but the other gifts are less well known in the modern world.

One of the other gifts was frankincense, and you may be surprised what this substance can do to give you better health now.

The first question that many people will have is: What is frankincense? DrAxe.com describes it this way:

“Frankincense, sometimes referred to as olibanum, is a common type of essential oil used in aromatherapy that can offer a variety of health benefits: helping relieve chronic stress and anxiety, reducing pain and inflammation, boosting immunity and even fighting cancer.

“Frankincense oil is sourced from the resin of the Boswellia carterii or Boswellia sacara tree that’s commonly grown in Somalia. This tree is different from many others in that it can grow with very little soil in dry and desolate conditions.

“The word frankincense comes from the term “franc encens,” which means quality incense in old French. Frankincense has been associated with many different religions over the years, especially the Christian religion, as it was one of the first gifts given to Jesus by the wise men.”

The next obvious question is: Why would you want to use frankincense today? To answer, frankincense has a number of health benefits. Frankincense helps to lower anxiety and reduce stress, making it a great addition to a warm bath or diffused in the air. It is also a natural antiseptic, so can be useful as a cleaner and deodorizer in the home, as well to help with fighting illness in the body. Additionally, ingesting frankincense can also help with digestive issues (be sure to only ingest 100% frankincense, not fragrance or perfume oils).

However, in our modern world, the use that many people will be interested in knowing about is frankincense’s use in fighting cancerThe Alternative Daily notes:

“Chinese and Ayurvedic medical models use frankincense as a major ingredient in treating many health conditions, including cancer. Western studies are now backing up this traditional use, showing that frankincense essential oil and extracts have potent anti-tumor activity. When frankincense was tested against human pancreatic cancer cells, the essential oil was able to cause substantial levels of cancer cell death by inhibiting signalling molecules and cell cycle regulators. The same effect was found in another study on bladder cancer cells.

“This study also tested the effect of the frankincense on normal bladder cells, and found that the essential oil was able to distinguish cancerous from normal cells. There were, again, multiple cell mechanism pathways activated by frankincense against the cancer cells. Overall the studies have indicated that no serious side effects have been recorded with continuous therapeutic use of frankincense essential oil.”

Daniel Barker also writes,

“Other studies have shown that frankincense oil kills many types of cancer cells, including those from breast, stomach, brain, bladder, ovary, pancreatic, lung, colon and prostate cancers.

“It has been discovered that frankincense essential oil may also be beneficial in relieving some of the side effects of traditional cancer treatments. Patients undergoing radiation therapy sometimes suffer afterwards from cerebral edema (swelling of the brain caused by accumulated fluid). The treatment for cerebral edema is usually based on steroid medications, which have their own set of side effects.”

Obviously, we recommend that you talk with your doctor if you are undergoing cancer treatment to explore how this can help your overall recovery, but, if you are dealing with cancer, we recommend that you at least consider frankincense as part of your overall treatment plan.
