It’s almost that time of year again… the holidays, you ask? No … It’s nearly Movember!
Movember is the name of the movement that gives us Novembers full of mustacheod men—all in the name of good causes promoting men’s health.
Movember began over a decade ago in Australia. The year was 2003 and no one—seriously, no one—was sporting a mustache. So, a few friends got together to see if they could get a trend going.
The first year, there were 30 who participated to raise awareness of prostate cancer and men’s health. But by 2004 they were up to 480 participants and had raised more than awareness. They had raised over $40,000 that funded six men’s health projects.
They were off and running.
In the next year, they were up to almost 10,000 participants and almost a million raised for causes. And they were still only active in Australia.
In the next couple of years, they expanded to New Zealand and then formally launched in the U.S. Over the next 10 years they would launch globally, gather close to 5 million participants and raise well over $600 million, funding 832 men’s health projects.
Today the Movember Foundation is ranked one of the top charities in the world. They have been true to their vision “To have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health.” By funding over 1200 projects worldwide, they are “stopping men from dying too young.”
Their mission is clear and laser-focused:
“We’re the only charity tackling men’s health on a global scale, year round. We’re addressing some of the biggest health issues faced by men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention.
We know what works for men, and how to find and fund the most innovative research to have both a global and local impact. We’re independent of government funding, so we can challenge the status quo and invest quicker in what works. In 13 years we’ve funded more than 1,200 men’s health projects around the world.”
How does it work? People sign up to grow a mustache, and they use it to raise awareness and funds through the month of November.
How creative can you be? VERY. The styles, shapes, and colors of mustaches grown for this campaign every year are exceptional. It’s no wonder they have been so successful.
